The jester Truffaldino arranges a grand feast to lift the deep depression of the Prince of the Kingdom of Clubs. The evil witch Fata Morgana appears, and after a scuffle, she is knocked over by Truffaldino. The Prince, seeing this, bursts into laughter. Insulted, she curses him to fall in love with three oranges and warns that the curse can only be lifted if he finds true love within them. The Prince embarks on a long journey with Truffaldino in search of the oranges, and the good magician Chelio advices them to open the oranges near water. Disregarding this advice, the Prince opens the first two oranges, and the princesses inside die of thirst. Only Princess Ninetta, from the third orange, survives after a sip of water. She and the Prince fall in love and hurry to marry, but the witch tries to disrupt their wedding. With the good magician’s help, they finally marry in a blessed ceremony.
